*** CALL FOR SHORT PAPERS ***

We are thrilled to announce the opening of the Call for Papers for the first special session on

Computational Methods for Mental Health and Well-Being

co-located with the 20th edition of CIBB, the International Conference of Computational Intelligence methods for Bioinformatics and Biostatistics, which will be held at Politecnico di Milano, Milan, Italy, from September 10th to 12th, 2025.
Conference website: https://www.bioinformatics.polimi.it/CIBB2025

Short paper submission deadline: April 30th, 2025

Aim and scope

The development of computational methods specifically designed for mental health and well-being is critical to address global challenges ensuring an ethical, transformative impact on user outcomes.

These methods have the potential of providing insights into understanding, diagnosing, and monitoring mental health conditions, by delivering personalized and cost-effective solutions to improve health outcomes and quality of care, as well as enabling early intervention, real-time support, and long-term well-being. They can analyze and integrate data from brain activity, behavior, and symptom patterns to explain underlying mechanisms of psychological responses, as well as possible neuropsychiatric pathways and trajectories of care for mental disorders.

However, the adoption of computational models in this specific context opens several challenges that need to be addressed, ranging from the need of high-quality datasets      requiring continuous interplay among researchers of different disciplines, to the design of systems that protect user privacy, ensure equity, and prevent algorithmic biases in sensitive mental health applications, to name a few.

The special session on “Computational Methods for Mental Health and Well-Being” aims to provide a cross-disciplinary exchange that combines computer science, psychology, mental healthcare, and ethics. This reflects the growing importance of technology in improving mental well-being, and also stimulates collaborative discussions on integrating computational methods into healthcare systems and identifying gaps in research or applications, while discussing the opportunities and risks presented by the adoption of technologies to manage very sensitive data.

Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):

  • Computational models for early detection of mental health issues
  • Computational tools for continuous monitoring
  • Computational models for personalized interventions
  • Computational models for disease risk stratification
  • Computational models for multimodal data analysis
  • Computational models for emotion recognition
  • AI Bias and Fairness in Mental Health and Well-being

PAPER SUBMISSION AND PUBLICATION

Submission Guidelines

Authors are invited to submit a short paper (4-6 pages) presenting their original research. Paper submissions will be handled through EasyChair platform and detailed instructions on the submission process will be provided later.

Publication Opportunities

Submitted contributions will undergo peer review, and all accepted contributions that will be presented will be also invited for submission of extended versions to the Springer Lecture Notes in Bioinformatics (LNBI) or to a selected journal. We are currently discussing this option with Frontiers and BMC (details forthcoming).

MMSP lab @AIxIA 2024

MMSP lab @AIxIA 2024

What a week we had starting November 25th, 2024!

All the members of the MMSP lab have travelled to Bolzano and participated in the 23rd International Conference of the Italian Association for Artificial Intelligence (AIxIA 2024).

Here’s a summary of what happened.

November 25th

Claudia Rabaioli participated to her first conference as a PhD student!
She presented her PhD project during the Doctoral Consortium and stood tall in front of her poster while explaining her cunning ideas to support positive moods.

November 26th

We had a very full day.

It started with Aurora Saibene hosting with her co-chair Silvia Corchs and Simone Fontana the third edition of the Artificial Intelligence for Human-Machine Interaction workshop (AIxHMI 2024).

Immediately we had the invited talks of Francesca Gasparini and Davide Chicco at AIxHMI 2024 and at the 13th Italian workshop on Machine Learning and Data Mining (MLDM 2024), respectively.

In the afternoon, Alessandra Grossi and Aurora Saibene presented their contributions to the AIxHMI 2024 workshop.

November 27th

Besides at the social dinner, we also worked during the conference hours XD

Patrizia Ribino presented the work co-authored by Davide Chicco and Francesca Gasparini at the HC@AIxIA 2024 + D4SH 2024 workshop and gave a lot of interesting insights on their work during the poster session with Maria Mannone.

November 28th

Last but not least, Sofia Fazio presented the work co-authored by Francesca Gasparini as her first conference-presentation experience.

Moreover, the group led by Patrizia Ribino received the best paper award!

Stay tuned to stay updated!!!

Davide Chicco @CIBB 2024

Davide Chicco @CIBB 2024

Last week our colleague Davide Chicco has attended the 19th conference on Computational Intelligence methods for Bioinformatics and Biostatistics with a double hat: steering committee member and author.

On Thursday, September 5th, he presented the work “Longitudinal clustering on electronic mental health records reveals meaningful groups of disease trajectories” co-authored with Patrizia Ribino, Claudia Di Napoli, Giovanni Paragliola, Luca Serino, and Francesca Gasparini.

On Friday, September 6th, he presented the work “A method based on DBSCAN clustering to measure UMAP dimensionality reduction results” co-authored with Giuseppe Jurman and Francesca Gasparini.

Congratulations for the huge success, Davide!

Do not forget to follow Davide for more updates on his research and on the upcoming events he is involved in 🙂

Bbtween: New technologies, rights and society: the bio-enhancement. A reflection through cinema.

Prof. Francesca Gasparini and Dr. Aurora Saibene of the MMSP group are part of the Organising Committee of the bbetween course on “New technologies, rights and society: the bio-enhancement. A reflection through cinema“.

The bbetween is organised in two 2 hours theoretical meetings and three 4 hours thematic meetings supported by movie watching.
The meetings will mainly focus on genetic bio-enhancement, the concept of cyborg, and neurotechnologies.

Experts in law, ethics, computer science, artificial intelligence, neurorehabilitation, and neuroscience will be involved.

The course will allow students to obtain CFU for the Data Science course by presenting the Open Badge released after the participation in at least 4 out of 5 meetings and passing the final exam.

The course is proposed in collaboration with the Department of Business and Law, The Department of Law, and the Department of Informatics, Systems and Communication (RegAIns project).

The Organising Committee is composed by Dr. Marta Sosa Navarro, Prof. Francesca Gasparini, Prof. Carla Gulotta, Dr. Aurora Saibene, Prof. Silvia Salardi and Dr. Francesco Stocchi.
